Track and Field solid at district, regionals

Franklin County High School’s track and field teams participated in the 2023 district meet at Tylertown on Friday, April 14 and the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Region 4-3A championships in Biloxi on Saturday, April 22.

The outdoor program, under the leadership of Coaches Ashley Barnes, Jarvis Hunt and B.J. Smithhart, competed in seven district-level events and those results included:

Girls DISTRICT

• Jai’lan Johnson — first place in discus (63-05).

• Tearryln Faust — fourth place in shot put (25-07).

BOYS DISTRICT

• Remontaie Cameron — third place in shot put (37-05).

• 4-by-100 meter relay team of Jaden Brown, Xavien Felton, Dracey McNair and Keyundre Felton — fourth place (46.69).

• 4-by-200 meter relay team of Brown, Peyton Touchstone, Xavien Felton and Keyundre Felton — third place (1:37.44).

• 4-by-400 meter relay team of McNair, Ziyuan Wallace, Xavien Felton and Brown — fourth place (4:01.85).

• 4-by-800 meter relay team of Drake Higgs, Wallace, Kentrez Bonds and Chris Pernell — fourth place (10:21.04).

In the regional championships at Saint Patrick High School this past weekend, participants were looking to finish in fourth place or better for the chance to advance to South State competition.

Here is how Franklin County fared overall:

GIRLS REGIONALS

• Johnson — fifth place in discus.

BOYS REGIONALS

Among those advancing to South State were:

• Cameron — third place in shot put (38-06).

• 4-by-100 meter relay team of Brown, Xavien Felton, McNair and Keyundre Felton — fourth place (45.99).

• 4-by-200 meter relay team of Brown, Xavien Felton, Bonds and Keyundre Felton — fourth place (1:36.00).

The 3A South State Championships will be held at Saint Andrews in Ridgeland on Friday, April 28.

Serving as track and field team managers this season are Jakorey Brown and Jetavious Washington, and Colby Huff is a volunteer with the program.
