PURVIS — Franklin County High School’s golf team claimed third-place overall honors in its 2023 season debut in the Purvis High School Invitational played on Monday, Feb. 13 at Pine Creek Golf Club.

The nine-hole competition featured eight teams participating from across South Mississippi, including Forrest County Agricultural, North Jones, Petal, Purvis, South Jones, Sumerall and West Jones.

At the end of the day, South Jones was the top finisher with a low team score of 178 while Purvis was second with a 180. Franklin County’s 185 finish was good enough for third place while Sumerall and West Jones were tied for fourth with a 191.

In addition, Petal wound up with a 219, Northeast Jones claimed a 238 and Forrest County collected a 241.

FC’s Kolby Cox led the Bulldogs’ golfers with an individual low score of 44, which ultimately was good enough for a tie for fourth place in the competition.

Tim Hutto and Preston Cupit ended their day with a 46 apiece and Jack Hutto recorded a 49.

Two other FC golfers — Kyle Walker and Parker Cupit — had scores of 49 and 59, respectively.

“We didn’t have our best showing, and the playing conditions were difficult,” FCHS Head Golf Coach Jeff Long said. “The greens were undulating and extremely fast. Still, I liked the way our guys fought for each stroke.”
