Funeral services for the Rev. Gerald Hobson Toney, 89, of Brandon were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, at Crossgates United Methodist Church in Brandon.

Interment was in Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon.

The Rev. Toney, affectionately referred to as “Hop,” was born to Thad William and Irma Rowley Toney on May 1, 1933, in Kokomo, and passed away on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at Chateau Pines Assisted Living Center in Brandon.

As an ordained elder, Toney served 56 years — from 1953 to 2009 — in the United Methodist Church.

Among the churches he pastored were Roxie, Prentiss, Bassfield, Dixie, Mize, McLain, Beaumont, Adams, Satartia, Mount Olivet, Wesley Chapel, Greendale, Vicksburg Northview, Benton, Midway, Florence, Morton, Wiggins, Forest Hill, Waynesboro and Newton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Speights Toney; his parents; and his sisters, Peggy June Thornhill, Billy Sue Toney and Mary Jane Upton.

Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Fisher and her husband, Sammy; his son, David Gerald Toney and his wife, Lesia; his three brothers, Charles William Toney and Terry Melton of Poplarville and Jack Gould Toney and his wife, Martha, of Kokomo; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Fisher Shipp and her husband, Dave, Toney Fisher and his wife, Bree, Alison Toney Cambell and her husband, Clark, Blair and Cara Toney; and his great-grandchildren, Annadell, Nona Lynn, Hattie Claire, Kaide, Jax and Wells.
