Dawgs’ varsity hoops teams open season 3-0

Franklin County High School’s varsity basketball teams have started the new hoops season 3-0 by downing North Pike, Loyd Star and West Lincoln during the first full week of this year’s campaign.

LADY BULLDOGS

FC 47, NORTH PIKE 40

Franklin County’s Lady Bulldogs led early and late against the visiting North Pike Lady Jaguars on Thursday, Nov. 4.

FC held an 11-7 advantage through the first quarter, but North Pike rallied to take a 23-21 lead into the mid-game break.

The Lady Dawgs battled back to make it a 30-all tie at the end of the third frame, and outpaced the Lady Jags, 17-10, in the final quarter of action.

FC’s JaSharreah Hunt led all scorers with 20 points while JaKya Brown added 15 in the winning effort.

Harmoni Porter chipped in five points as Rylei Turner contributed three and De’Asia Buie and Niyla Wright scored two each.

The Lady Dawgs were 12 of 25 at the charity stripe against North Pike.

FC 58, LOYD STAR 44

The Lady Bulldogs easily defeated Loyd Star, 58-44, at home Tuesday, Nov. 2 as Hunt exploded for a game-high 34 points in the outing.

Hunt was also 4 of 5 from the free throw line while the team —as a whole — shot 60 percent by going 18 of 30 from the line.

Brown finished her night with nine points to help pace the Lady Dawgs as Turner and Porter each recorded six and Wright, Kennedy Washington and Saiyon Harris each added one apiece.

FC 54, WEST LINCOLN 50

Franklin County opened its season on Saturday, Oct. 30 with a 54-40 win over West Lincoln.

Two Lady Bulldogs finished the contest by scoring in double digits — Hunt recorded 28 and Brown contributed 17.

Buie, Porter and Turner finished with three points each for FC.

West Lincoln jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter with FC’s offense going on a 17-16 tear in the second frame.

Trailing 28-23 to start the second half, Franklin County outscored West Lincoln 13-6 in the third and 18-16 in the fourth to seal the deal.

The Lady Bulldogs were hot from the charity stripe with an 18 of 26 shooting effort — hitting 69.2 percent of their shots.

BULLDOGS

FC 55, NORTH PIKE 53

Things stayed fairly close from start to finish on Thursday, Nov. 4 as Franklin County hosted North Pike and held on to take a 55-53 win over the visiting Jaguars.

FC opened with a 15-11 first-quarter run against North Pike before the Jags outpaced the Dawgs 18-11 in the second frame.

Leading by three to start the second half, North Pike was able to keep things close in the third quarter with a 13-all run before FC responded by outscoring the Jags, 16-11, in the fourth quarter of the affair.

FC had a 4 of 15 shooting performance — 26 percent — from the free throw line while North Pike was 2 of 8 on the night.

Kobe Marshall led the Bulldogs with a team-high 15 points with Caleibria McDonald chipping in nine and Daylen Thomas adding eight.

Others getting in on the scoring action for FC included: Michael Covington and Jailen Hunt with seven apiece; Derrick Wilson with four; Iverson Hughes with three; and KePatrick Nimox with two.

FC 58, LOYD STAR 42

While Loyd Star outscored Franklin County in the first quarter, 10-8, the Bulldogs’ offense proved to be explosive in the second and third frames as FC went on tears of 15-6 and 24-10, respectively.

In the end, the Dawgs cruised to a 58-42 win over Loyd Star.

Covington led with 13 points for FC while Marshall tacked on 12 in the effort.

Thomas and McDonald combined for eight apiece in the win while Kentrez Bonds scored four; Hughes, LaDanian Pelt and Christian Goins added three each; and Wilson and Hunt recorded two apiece.

FC was 8 of 14 from the line in shooting free throws.

FC 71, WEST LINCOLN 37

The Bulldogs opened the season by dominating West Lincoln en route to a 71-37 victory.

FC made an early statement with a 23-11 run in the first quarter and then overran West Lincoln 15-12 in the second, 19-6 in the third and 14-8 in the fourth.

Two Bulldogs scored in double figures with Marshall credited with 16 points and Thomas recording 10.

Covington, McDonald and Bonds each had eight in the winning effort while Pelt scored five, Hunt and Nimox accounted for four each, Hughes and Goins collected three each and Craig Jackson tacked on two.

The Bulldogs went 12 of 26 from the free throw line against West Lincoln.

On Tuesday, Nov. 9, FC played host to Tylertown, but results of those contests were not available at press time.

The Bulldogs were slated to travel to North Pike at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12 for the rubber match in their early season series.

FC is slated to face off against Loyd Star in a road contest set for Thursday, Nov. 18 before taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The team will face off against McComb at home starting at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 30.
