IRENE WILLIAMS SMITH
Oct. 30, 1930-Aug. 9, 2024
Funeral services for Irene Williams Smith, 93, were conducted on
Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024 from Greendale Church in Roxie.
Interment followed at Greendale Cemetery.
Born on Oct. 30, 1930, she was raised along with her brother, Carroll,
in Natchez. She met the love of her life, Williard Preston Smith, and
they were married on June 21, 1947. They newlyweds moved to Jefferson
County for Williard's work at the sawmill and she joined Greendale
Methodist Church, where her husband was already a member. They raised
their two children, Wayne and Beverly, on their family land, where they
remained for the rest of their lives.
"Nanny," as she was affectionately known by everyone, was famous for
her large spreads of country cooking. She cooked a full course meal
every day with vegetables that she grew in her garden. It did not matter
who was at her house, everyone sat down to supper together. Her table
was always full of good food, family, friends and sometimes a random
stranger who happened to be passing through. All were welcome at
"Nanny's" table.
"Nanny" was also passionate about her community. She loved almost
everyone. Her heart was so big and kind that she met every opportunity
to serve with great tenacity and intention. She loved serving people and
also keeping up with the latest activities with her friends. She had a
fun sense of humor, so there was always a group of people gathered
around her. If you wanted to know something, go sit by "Nanny."
She died on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.
She is survived by her immediate family and son Williard "Wayne"
Smith and daughter Beverly Smith Stebbins; her grandchildren and their
respective spouses, Steve Smith, Elliott and Sarah Stebbins and Brady
and Beth Stebbins; her great-grandchildren and their respective spouses,
Colton and Brandy, Samantha and Tristan Smith, Emma Claire and Eli
Stebbins, Bentley and Brooke Stebbins; her great-grandchildren, Steven
James and Caden Smith; her breother and sister-in-law, Carroll and June
Williams; her nephews and their spouses, Kenny and Jenna Williams and
Michael and Vangi Williams; her niece and her spouse, Michelle and Chris
Strong; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her
daughter-in-law, Sandra Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of
Irene Smith to Greendale Cemetery Association, 101 Smith Rd., Roxie, MS
