Dawgs take two 7-3A hoops decisions

The Franklin County varsity boys basketball team took back-to-back wins last week to open post-holiday play with a 62-42 win over Wilkinson County on Jan. 7 and slipped past Port Gibson, 59-50, on Jan. 4.

The victories pushed FC to 12-4 on the current hoops season, and to a 2-0 mark in 7-3A divisional play.

FC 62, WILKINSON COUNTY 42

Franklin County came out on fire in last Friday’s road showdown at Wilkinson County — going on a 21-3 offensive spurt in the first eight minutes of regulation and holding on for the win.

The visiting Bulldogs outpaced WC 17-16 in the second frame and 14-13 in the fourth quarter with the teams battling at a 10-all tie in the third.

Three FC players finished in double figures — Michael Covington led the way with 15 (five three-pointers), Derrick Wilson chipped in 15 (a trio of three-pointers, two field goals and a 2-of-2 effort from the charity stripe) and Caleibria McDonald wound up with 13 (six field goals and a 1-of-2 performance from the line) in the winning effort.

Also contributing to the victory were Amarion Wilson, eight points; Kobe Marshall, six; Kentrez Bonds and KePatrick Nimox, two; and Jailen Hunt, one.

FC 59, PORT GIBSON 50

The varsity Bulldogs basketball program outscored Port Gibson at home in all four quarters of last Tuesday’s showdown against the Blue Waves.

FC led 12-9 through the first quarter and held a 27-23 bulge at the mid-game break. Coming out of the locker room, Franklin went on a 13-10 run in the third and a 19-17 offensive burst in the fourth to seal the victory.

A trio of Bulldogs accounted for double-digit scoring with Marshall pacing the effort with 15 points (five field goals, a three-pointer and shooting 2-of-4 from the line.

Covington contributed 14 points for Franklin with three three-pointers and a 5-of-6 effort from the stripe.

McDonald recorded 13 points with four field goals, a trey and by going 2-of-3 from the free throw line.

FC’s Jay Malone tacked on six points while Amarion Wilson added four. Craig Jackson recorded three points with Derrick Wilson and Bonds finishing with two each.

The Bulldogs will play twice on the road this week — traveling to Wesson on Tuesday, Jan. 11 and to Hazlehurst on Friday, Jan. 14.

FC will play Jefferson County at home on Tuesday, Jan. 18 before traveling to Port Gibson on Friday, Jan. 21.

The Dawgs will host Wilkinson County on Tuesday, Jan. 25 and Hazlehurst on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
