Lady Dawgs thump Wilkinson County, Port Gibson

Franklin County’s Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team took key 7-3A district wins last week in knocking off Wilkinson County, 50-35, on Jan. 7 and blasting past Port Gibson, 46-13, on Jan. 4.

The victories upped FC’s record to 12-4 overall with the team now sporting a 2-0 mark in regional competition with roughly three weeks remaining in the regular season.

FC 50, WILKINSON COUNTY 35

Despite trailing by one-point early, Franklin County’s offense had no problems finding the rim in the second and third quarters in a 50-35 win over Wilkinson County last Friday night.

In the second stanza, FC’s offense went on a 17-2 run and pulled out to a 27-13 lead headed into the mid-game hiatus.

The Lady Dawgs picked up where they left off with a 13-8 scoring effort in the third quarter.

Wilkinson County charged back in the fourth frame with a 14-10 offensive performance, but the comeback attempt was too little, too late.

JaKya Brown had a stellar night with 20 points — 10 in each half — to lead all scorers in the contest.

Ja’Sharreah Hunt finished the night with 10 points for FC with Harmoni Porter adding six, Niyla Wright chipping in five and Rylei Turner tacking on four. De’Asia Buie wound up with two.

Franklin hit 13-of-30 from the free throw line in the win with Brown sinking 9-of-17 and Hunt collecting 2-of-6.

FC 46, PORT GIBSON 13

The Lady Bulldogs never trailed in a 46-13 thumping of Port Gibson’s Lady Blue Waves last Tuesday at home.

FC jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter and held a 24-10 advantage at intermission. The Lady Dawgs exploded again in the third with a 20-1 run with the teams playing to a 2-all tie in the final frame.

Hunt finished with a game-high 20 points for Franklin — scoring 11 (a pair of treys, two field goals and a free throw) before halftime and hitting three three-pointers in the second half.

Brown had nine points for the Lady Bulldogs with Turner scoring seven, Porter hitting six, Kennedy Washington adding two and Wright and Buie both tacking on one each.

FC was 4-of-13 from the charity stripe against Port Gibson with Hunt, Buie, Turner and Wright all going 1-of-2 each.

The Lady Dawgs will play back-to-back games on the road this week against Wesson on Tuesday, Jan. 11 and Hazlehurst on Friday, Jan. 14.

The squad will play at home against Jefferson County on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and on the road at Port Gibson on Friday, Jan. 21.

FC will host back-to-back home games against Wilkinson County on Tuesday, Jan. 25 and Hazlehurst on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
