The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-vehicle mishap that claimed the life of a 71-year-old Smithdale man on U.S. Highway 98 in Franklin County.

The wreck happened around 4:38 p.m., Friday, May 19, according to Cpl. Craig James, who serves as public affairs officer of MHP Troop M in Brookhaven.
“Three vehicles were traveling west on U.S. 98 when a 2016 Volkswagon Jetta, driven by 22-year-old Shaxavier Green of Meadville, collided with a 1996 Buick Century driven by Clifton Ramsey,” James said.

“After the initial collision, a 2015 Freightliner truck — driven by 39-year-old Nacole Williams of Brookhaven — then collided with the Buick driven by Ramsey.”

James said Ramsey reportedly sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck.

Funeral services for Ramsey were set for 11 a.m., Thursday, May 25 at Franklin County’s Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment was set to follow in the church cemetery.

Craft-Dillon Funeral Home of McComb was in charge of arrangements.

James confirmed the probe into what might have caused the accident is ongoing.

MHP is also looking into two other traffic incidents that also happened on Friday.
Around 8:08 a.m., in Amite County, 21-year-old Anthony Oswalt of Brookhaven was killed when his 2004 Chevrolet truck left Mississippi Highway 569, collided with a tree and overturned.
Then, around 3:47 p.m., in Wilkinson County, 30-year-old Demarcus Coleman of Wynne Cross, Ark., died when his 2017 Freightliner truck went off U.S. Highway 61 and struck a tree.
Those separate incidents in neighboring counties are also still being investigated by MHP, according to James.
